Mata sa Rang

Maths Recovery (Ireland) in conjunction with Laois Education Centre invites primary schools who are interested in having teachers trained in Mata sa Rang to apply for inclusion in this programme in January 2020 (dates to be confirmed).

The overall aim of this project is to train teachers in the approaches drawn from the Maths Recovery Programme in order to support in-class approaches to numeracy. In 2019/20, there will be two modules available.

Module 1: The content of this module will be broadly aimed at first class (much of the content is applicable to Infants or second class: Number Words and Numerals; Structuring Number; Early Addition & Subtraction).

Module 2: The content of this module will be broadly aimed at third class (much of the content is applicable to second or fourth class: Conceptual Place Value; Addition & Subtraction to 100 and beyond; Multiplication & Division).

In order to participate in this project schools are requested to commit to the following:

  • Support the teacher to practice instruction/assessments
  • Pay costs of core text and content booklet, print materials, CD, tutor costs, refreshments and support (€200 per teacher per module) payable to Laois Education Centre on application. See list below of materials included in the cost.

Participating teachers will be expected to:

  • Attend and participate in all training; complete school-based tasks; and complete a reflective journal/brief report.

Contents of Module 1 pack:  (€200 per teacher per module)

Purple Book ‘Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 year olds’

Pack 1 Print Materials (144 pages on laminated card)

Booklet with all handouts

DVD of printable materials

Teaching Materials (2 x Write-on Numeral Flip Stands; 2 x Child’s Rekenrek)

Contents of Module 2 pack:  (€200 per teacher per module)

Red Book ‘Teaching Number in the Classroom with 7-11year olds’

Booklet with all handouts

Pack 2 materials (250 pages on laminated card)

DVD of printable materials

(The reduction in cost in Module 2 is accounted for by not including the concrete teaching materials from Autopress)

Training will take place in Laois Education Centre and will be over 15 hours, delivered as five 3-hour sessions out of school time. A certificate of completion will be awarded.

If you need more details on any aspect of the proposed project, please feel free to contact Margaret Mary in the centre on (057) 8672400.
