Planning for Classes for Teachers with Some SEN Hours and Little SEN Training Webinar 15.11.23

This webinar is for post-primary teachers who have been allocated some SEN classes and have not received any formal training on SEN teaching. Although the course deals in particular with dyslexia, many of the strategies and resources will also help when working with students with other specific learning difficulties such as Dyspraxia and Autistic Spectrum. The emphasis is on practical strategies and planning for the SEN class and the many resources which can help.

Topics to be Covered

• Dyslexia and how it affects students at second level.
• The principles underlying the strategies that help the students.
• Classroom planning/resources/strategies for the teacher with some SEN classes. In particular a template for the year’s classwork for a SEN group is outlined.
• Study skills for the student with dyslexia.

1. To give an understanding the many ways dyslexia can affect the student at post primary.
2. To investigate the strategies that help the student with dyslexia achieve.
3. To have a template for the classwork for a year with a SEN group.

Facilitator:      Wyn McCormack worked as guidance counsellor and special education teacher as well as being the parent of three sons with dyslexia. She has designed and presented courses on dyslexia for teachers, parents and students since the 1990s. She is the author of the Factsheets on Dyslexia at Second Level (2014 and updated annually), Lost for Words 3rd Ed. 2007, and co-author of Dyslexia, an Irish Perspective 2nd Ed 2010.
