Assistive Technologies 3 for Post-Primary Teachers 7.11.2019
In collaboration with IT Carlow, we are delivering a set of three half-day workshops for post-primary teachers in Laois Education Centre catchment area on assistive technologies such as Echo smart pens, reader pens, freeware, speech recognition software, mind-mapping software, and magnification/screen reading software. While the overall objective of the programme is to ease the transition into higher education for students with disabilities and harness assistive technology to see them achieve their optimum potential, it is also an opportunity for teachers to upskill in the area of assistive technology and look at how this might help them and their students access education. Unfortunately, substitute cover is not provided for these sessions.
Sessions 2 & 3 Freeware
The purpose of these sessions is to introduce software that is free to use when supporting students with disabilities both physical and/or cognitive, in and out of school.
Freeware is any copyrighted software, application or program that may be freely downloaded, installed, used and shared. Such programs are available for use at no cost to general end users. Freeware differs from free software, as the latter allows a user to modify source code for republishing or integration with other software.
The focus of this session will be on the following:
Software for Laptops/PC’s/Tablets/iPads
Software for Smartphones
Google Docs software
Introduction to freeware for Hearing/ Visual Impairments, which may be of benefit to existing and/or incoming students.
