Using Scratch to Develop Numeracy and Problem Solving Skills 19LS708

PLEASE NOTE: All course fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable

How can we use a simple computer coding language in primary schools? The new and improved Scratch 3.0 can help you develop your pupils’ skills in numeracy and problem solving. Scratch is a free online programming tool that can enhance your pupils’ skills in logic, reasoning, abstract thinking, problem solving, creativity and much more! This practical course includes a bank of videos focused on classroom practice showing how Scratch is being used in classrooms all over Ireland.

Each module is focused on the practical application of Scratch and how its use can develop key skills in mathematics. We will also explore how Scratch can be incorporated into many different curricular areas from Gaeilge and SESE.

Each module includes focused discussion regarding practical classroom applications of Scratch programming and makes specific reference to the use of Scratch as a teaching tool in developing, supporting and extending children’s application of key mathematical concepts and skills. By means of a range of practical group activities, participants will also explore how they might incorporate Scratch across a variety of curriculum areas.

Other important key areas of course content to be discussed and developed include digital citizenship and internet safety, finding and selecting good quality digital content online, developing whole school assessment practices through the use of digital technologies and exploring the newly constructed Digital Learning Framework and learning how a school might go about creating their digital learning plan in this regard.
